The First Meeting

As the last week of pre-work starts before travel to Chile (well its exactly 7 days now for travel), the pace of activities seems to pick up. Am still to close on my packing checklist. Packing itself cannot be done till the last day, cause am not back in India till 4th March to travel ahead.

One thing I need to do in those 2 days in India just before travel is to upgrade my Camera, which though a working SLR, is quite dated. That will take some of the time I have in Delhi, but will be worth it. Am a Canon person (changing camera's when you own lenses becomes difficult) and any recommendations on upgrade would be helpful. Anyways back to the last week activities which kicked off today.

Key part of this last week is the first interlock we have with our host teams via Skype. The first meeting was today and in this first meeting we were able to see each other, talk through the high level scope items and clarify issues that we would be working in 4 weeks that we spend in #ibmcsc Chile. Though our hosts in Chile could connect well on Skype, but one of our team members - Zuzana's video never showed up in the 45 odd minutes of the conference. Contrary to expectations Skype worked for me. May be because its a weekend day here in KSA, was in hotel and bandwidth usage is generally less, as hotels tend to be less occupied over the weekend, in this business only city. Real test would be on Monday in the next conference we will have.

For now need to go through the material, project library and go through other inputs available to prepare ourselves for the 4 week program.

In addition to this, have been trying to find synchronization in teams itinerary (12 members traveling from different parts of the world). One person starts with me from Delhi, same Airport at same time but on an entirely different route, till we meet again in Santiago after over 40 hours.

My trip has transits through Amsterdam and Paris on the way to Santiago. In Paris expect to be joined by two more members of the team on the same flight. Its a long haul and will be tiring for all. Expect to meet many other members of the team at Santiago, before boarding the next flight to Puerto Montt reaching by evening of 8th.

  1. I'm going just with my iPhone camera this time. It was a hard decision to make but decided luggage space is too much of a premium and the camera had to go. I'm glad you will have a nice camera with you, though! (I will try not to request too many photos from you. "Kapil, please take a good picture of this and send it to me!") :-)
